The processes can be extremely complicated, bureaucratic and thus tend to be somewhat expensive. While there is never any guarantee with immigration, they will not take on applications where they are not 100% confident of success. Straight up - if you have ever been convicted of tax evasion, drug dealing, gun running, a serious sex crime or similar in your own country - forget it, you won't get into Brazil: the final part of any permanent visa application is a detailed police report in your own country.
